|Joy Katzen-Guthrie — Cantorial Leader

In September 2012, Joy joined Congregation Beth Am as Cantorial Leader, prior to which she has served as a cantorial soloist since 1990 for Florida congregations Temple B’nai Israel in Clearwater, Congregation Aliyah of Clearwater, Congregation B’nai Emmunah of Tarpon Springs and Temple Shir Shalom in Gainesville as well as composer/lyricist, concert artist, pianist, writer, speaker, and educator devoted to uplifting, empowering, and inspiring through the arts for more than 30 years. A Memphis native who has made her home in the Tampa Bay area since 1981, Joy melds a vast repertoire and knowledge of Judaic music and music from world genres in a repertoire of thousands of songs. She brings her expertise and knowledge of music and Jewish history to congregation, classroom, concert hall, and in 14 published recordings that include songs of Shabbat, Jewish holidays, Israeli and Yiddish music. Additionally, she actively appears as a artist-in-residence, guest speaker, concert artist, and workshop facilitator, creates and serves as Artist/Scholar-in-Residence for Jewish heritage tours around the world, has led 7 tours to China and Turkey and will lead her first Jewish Heritage/Humanitarian Tour to Cuba in March 2014. She has been a contributing writer to the Encylopedia Judaica and her photographs have been published worldwide. With her husband Mark, Joy operates a professional recording studio, Tune-of-the-Century Music®, as well as sound design services for a roster of congregations, organizations, broadcast facilities and individuals. Joy has received appointments to the Florida Artist Residency Directory, funded by the State Division of Cultural Affairs and has been awarded two arts resource fund performance arts grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. She has contributed to continuing education programs of seemingly endless spiritual, musical, cultural, and historical subjects for more than a decade for Eckerd College, the University of South Florida, as well as continuing educational and cultural programs nationally. Joy contributes to Beth Am’s continuing education series with concerts and classes of many Jewish interests.
Vikki Silverman — Cantor Emerita
Vikki Silverman served as the Cantorial Director of Education for Congregation Beth Am from 1986 to 2012. She has devoted her life to the field of Jewish Education with the goal of helping to perpetuate the Jewish People. In addition to involvement with Congregation Beth Am, she has worked in the field since 1973 as a religious school teacher, principal, youth group advisor, and/or Cantorial soloist at the following Tampa synagogues and Jewish educational organizations: B’nai Brith Hillel at U.S.F., Hillel School Of Tampa, Young Judea, Temple Schaarai Zedek, Congregation Rodeph Sholom, and principal of Berger Community High School.
Mrs. Silverman has Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the University of South Florida and has Jewish Educator’s Certificates from the Union for Reform Judaism, Hebrew College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and Haifa University. In addition, she has studied and apprenticed with several Conservative and Reform Cantors.
Vikki presently serves as President and CEO of Airite Air-conditioning, however the position she treasures the most is that of wife, mother, and grandmother.
